Das zwischen 1993 und 2012 mit Unterbrechungen und in verschiedenen Besetzungen aktive Noiserock-Trio ULME kann wohl ohne Übertreibung als eine der einflussreichsten Bands der deutschen Alternative-Musikkultur bezeichnet werden. Songwriter, Sänger und Gitarrist von Ulme war Arne Heesch, der seit der Auflösung der Band nun bei TREEDEON aktiv ist, die bereits zwei Alben auf Exile On Mainstream veröffentlicht haben und sowohl das Erbe von Ulme fortführen, wie auch die Vehemenz und Katharsis des Noise auf ein neues Level heben.

Mit “Demons Are Scared” liegt nun das erste Soloalbum von Arne Heesch vor.

Dabei sah der Verlauf der Geschichte zunächst etwas ganz anders vor:  Nach der fast gleichzeitigen Auflösung von ULME und JINGO DE LUNCH im Jahre 2012, nahm Arne Heesch die Einladung an, eine Acoustic-Solo-Show auf dem SOUTH OF MAINSTREAM Festival zu spielen, für das ULME bereits gebucht waren. Als Verstärkung kam Yvonne Ducksworth (Ex-Jingo De Lunch) hinzu und beide spielten ein improvisiertes, aber gerade deswegen sehr intensives Acoustic-Set aus Songs, die Arne kurz vorher geschrieben hatte. Unter dem Einfluss der Trennung von Ulme, inspiriert durch Ruhe, Neuorientierung und der Auseinandersetzung sowohl mit inneren Dämonen als auch mit äußeren, auch positiven Einflüssen hatten sich diese Songs fast selbst geschrieben, wie Arne heute sagt.  Das Leben auf dem Land in Schleswig-Holstein, aber bereits koloriert durch den anstehenden Neuanfang in der Großstadt Berlin, der Schmerz, den der Abschluss eines Lebensabschnitts zwangsläufig mit sich bringt, die Rückschau aber auch Aufbruch, die Kraft, mit der einen die Liebe mitzureißen imstande ist – alle diese Gedanken und Emotionen färbten den Klang und Inhalt dieser Songs. Nach dem Gig auf dem SOM Festival folgte eine weitere Show im Berliner Schokoladen und obwohl diese beiden Konzerte bereits das vorwegnehmen sollten, was nun hier, 10 Jahre später, als Platte vorliegt, drehte sich die Kompassnadel zunächst in eine andere Richtung: weg von der akustischen und zutiefst emotionalen Introspektion hin zum lauten, jedoch nicht weniger kathartischen Noise von Treedeon.

Die Zeit war noch nicht gekommen. Doch nun ist sie da.

Gemeinsam mit Arnes Lebenspartnerin Yvonne und dem Drummer Andy Schünemann haben Treedeon bisher zwei Alben veröffentlicht. Das dritte ist bereits in Arbeit. Und während sich in den letzten Monaten das öffentliche Leben und Kultur vollkommen veränderten Bedingungen gegenübersah, erwachten die Songs zu neuem Leben. Arne und Yvonne überarbeiteten die Stücke, zwei neue neue kamen hinzu: das intensiv-kathartische “Treeprayer”, das am Todestag von Arne Heeschs Vater entstand sowie der ursprünglich von Ulme veröffentlichte Song “The Glowing”, der in ganz besonderem Maße den Aufbruch und die Hingabe an den eigenen Weg beschreibt. So war “The Glowing” der erste Song, den Ulme nach der Neuformierung 2005 veröffentlichten. Aufgenommen wurde “Demons Are Scared” fast vollständig im Alleingang mit der Hilfe von Arnes Freund Ulf “Fluffi” Reinhard. Yvonne Ducksworth ist auf den meisten Songs als Sängerin zu hören. Im Sommer 2021 führten Arne und Yvonne das Album erstmalig live auf, im Rahmen des Heumond-Festivals in Sassnitz auf Rügen. Weitere Live-Shows sollen folgen.

“Demons Are Scared” ist limitiert auf 300 Stück und erscheint als Vinyl-only mit einer beigelegten CD, die das gesamte Album enthält.

The German Noise rock trio ULME existed between 1993 and 2012 with a lengthy hiatus between 1999 and 2005. ULME can rightfully be dubbed as one of the most influential bands of the German Alternative music scene. Songwriter, singer, and guitar player in Ulme was Arne Heesch, who is now fronting the Sludge/Noise outfit TREEDEON together with his partner Yvonne Ducksworth of the no less influential band JINGO DE LUNCH. Treedeon so far have released two albums on Exile On Mainstream and carry forward the cathartic urgency Ulme was regarded for, by taking it to a new level. Treedeon played the mighty Roadburn Festival twice and have been playing numerous tours and shows in the past with bands like Eyehategod, Confusion Master, Bellrope and Black Shape Of Nexus, to name a few.

With “Demons Are Scared” we are now thrilled to present the first solo album by Arne Heesch, featuring Yvonne Ducksworth on most of the songs.

History as they say unfolds in unexpected and sometimes mysterious ways, and it was no different for this album since most of the tracks on “Demons Are Scared” can be considered the founding basis for what later became Treedeon. After the almost simultaneous demise of Ulme, and the 2nd spring of seminal Crossover punk/metal icons Jingo de Lunch, Arne and Yvonne started as an acoustic solo set on the 2012 (and final) edition of the SOUTH OF MAINSTREAM FESTIVAL. Ulme had originally been booked, but unfortunately disbanded right before the festival. The songs had been written shortly before by Arne, under the influence of Ulme’s breakup, inspired by the silence and reorientation as well as by the struggle with inner demons. Arne by that time was living a quiet life in a rural landscape in Northern Germany, but headed for Berlin, to move in with his new partner Yvonne. The dichotomy between pain resulting from ending a chapter in his life, and the hope for a new beginning, shaped the tracks in a constant flow between melancholic and hopeful approaches. With all this inspiration the songs kind of created themselves as Arne puts it today.

Shortly after the apperance on the South Of Mainstream Festival, a 2nd gig was booked at Berlin’s Schokoladen and as much as these two shows did augur what now, almost 10 years later materializes itself as an album, life navigated the two to different shores: away from the introspective emotionality towards the loud but no less cathartic noise of Treedeon.

The time simply wasn’t right yet. But it is now.

After two albums as Treedeon and a third one currently in the works, life changed for Arne and Yvonne as for all of us in the years 2020 and 2021. Things went quieter, more focussed and private. So did these songs – dawning towards a new urgency, gaining a new life. Arne and Yvonne reworked them and added two more – the intense “Treeprayer”, which was written on the day of Arnes fathers death, and “The Glowing”, which especially deals with starting over again and the unconditional dedication to follow one’s own paths. “The Glowing” is an older song which was released as first track when Ulme reformed in 2005 after six years of hiatus and thus illustrates either a new beginning as much as it has a historical reference attached to it.

“Demons Are Scared” is a fully homegrown album, recorded by Ulf ‘Fluffi’ Reinhard mostly in Arne’s living room. Yvonne Ducksworth’s vocals are featured on most of the songs, as well as some additional guitar and keyboard work by Fluffi. The album was mastered by Exile-On-Mainstream-alumni Stefan Brueggemann. In August 2021, Arne and Yvonne presented the album for the first time; in a stunning performance on Ruegen Island. The open air concert by the sea at the very North of Germany, was part of the inspirational Heumond Festival, alongside performances by MIGHT, and Conny Ochs, the latter, who also drew the lettering for the album cover of “Demons Are Scared”.

The album is limited to 300 copies and is released as vinyl-only with a CD containing all tracks thrown in.
