OSTINATO are back!
Post-Rock Pioneers Return; Band To Debut New Material At Special Exile On Mainstream/Making Vinyl Live Event In Alexandria, Virginia On May 28th
After nearly two decades of relative silence, broken only by a handful of select festival appearances, OSTINATO is back. The band that released one of the most influential cinematographic and soundscape rock albums of its time with their 2006 LP Chasing The Form is returning with new material.
Between 1997 and 2006, the OSTINATO trio carved out a distinctive space between psychedelic soundscapes, post-hardcore intensity, and experimental force. During that time, they recorded two albums for the German label Exile On Mainstream Records, toured extensively, and built a reputation for immersive and uncompromising live performances before stepping away for an extended hiatus.
Now, nearly twenty years later, OSTINATO returns as a quartet, bringing new sonic depth and momentum to their unmistakable sound. Fans will get their first opportunity to hear the new material live on May 28th, when the band performs at Galactic Panther Art Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia. The concert takes place as part of the American edition of the Making Vinyl Conference, which is being held this year in Washington/Alexandria.
While the band’s sonic identity remains instantly recognizable – echo-soaked guitar textures, slowly evolving repetitive structures, and a driving rhythm section with a sharp edge – the addition of a second guitar adds new density and dynamic range. Guitarist/vocalist Anna Hennessy now joins guitarist/vocalist Dave Hennessy, bassist/vocalist Jarrod Hood, and drummer Matthew Clark. Where there was once space, there is now pressure: more layers, more movement, more impact. Audiences already caught a glimpse of this renewed energy during Ostinato’s appearance at the EOM25 Festival in Berlin in 2024, though the band held back their new material at that time. The Alexandria performance will mark its official live debut.
The evening promises to be particularly compelling with the first-ever performance of a new collaborative project featuring musicians who have shaped the independent and post-hardcore scene of the U.S. East Coast for decades – Joe Lally/Jerry Busher/Yanni Papadopoulos. Lally is known as the bassist of the legendary Fugazi and current member of The Messthetics. Busher is a long-time collaborator within the Fugazi circle and member of bands such as Shadow Riot and Fidelity Jones. Papadopoulos is the guitarist for Stinking Lizaveta, whose guitar work – moving effortlessly between doom, jazz, and noise – has set its own benchmarks for years. This marks the first time these musicians will share a stage in this constellation.
Rather than a nostalgic look back, the night represents a collision of different currents within a scene that has always defined itself through independence, experimentation, and forward momentum. On May 28th, that spirit takes center stage once again.
