Die Geschichte von GAVIAL beginnt vor fast 15 Jahren als Projekt in Anlehnung an einen Nirvana-Song und aus einem Wortspiel als “Two Red Boys”. Drei Alben als TOURETTE BOYS, zwei Kollaboration mit Tim Holehouse und eine Split-EP mit den Labelkollegen Gaffa Ghandi folgen ebenso wie unzählige Gigs und Touren mit Bands wie Acid Mothers Temple, Dyse, Gaffa Ghandi, The Skull, True Widow oder Sleepy Sun. Die Basis ist eine enge Freundschaft zwischen den Musikern, obwohl sie in verschiedenen Städten leben. Die weitläufigen und unberührten Landschaften zwischen Berlin und Dresden mögen ihren Anteil an der Inspiration für den Sound haben, dessen psychedelische Entrücktheit sich immer wieder in modernem Blues erdet und mehr an den Desert Rock erinnert, den wir aus den Weiten Arizonas kennen als an die urbane Hektik der Großstadt. Flirrende Soundlandschaften, teilweise dunkel und melancholisch, dann wieder hoffnungsvoll von gleißendem Licht und der wohligen, aber trotzdem Unheil verheißenden Hitze der Wüste erfüllt – darin sind GAVIAL wahre Meister.

Moment…GAVIAL? Tourette Boys? Wir haben 2023 und es ist Zeit für eine Zäsur. Und das auf gleich drei verschiedenen Ebenen. Mit VOR erscheint das insgesamt vierte Album der Band erstmalig nicht im Eigenvertrieb, sondern auf einem Label – Exile On Mainstream. Bereits zu den Aufnahmen 2022 wächst die Band vom Trio zum Quartett. Und mit diesem Schritt kommt eine überfällige Änderung des Namens, den die Band selbst mit den Worten erklärt:

“In den letzten Jahren haben wir jedoch häufig über unsere Musik, unsere Videos und unseren Namen diskutiert und versucht, über unsere Entscheidungen in dieser Zeit nachzudenken. Was den Namen der Band angeht, sind wir zu dem Entschluss gekommen, dass es nicht mehr angemessen ist, ihn weiter zu verwenden. Betroffene Menschen verdienen Respekt und wir denken, dass dieser Bandname einen Mangel daran zeigt. Dafür möchten wir uns entschuldigen. Deshalb werden wir nicht länger unter dem Namen “Tourette Boys” Musik machen. Stattdessen werden wir unsere musikalische Reise als ‘Gavial’ fortsetzen.”

VOR ist ein weiteres Mal gekennzeichnet von der Suche nach einem zeitgenössischen Ausdruck des Blues, ohne seine Authentizität infrage zu stellen. Mit dem Blick über den Tellerrand hin zu Ambient, Soul, Gospel und Country verweben GAVIAL verschiedene Fäden zu einem Klangteppich, der die scharfen Klippen redundanter Kategorien wie Retro oder Stoner einfach rechts liegen lässt. Namedropping hat die Musik zwar nicht nötig, aber wer im thematisch sortierten Plattenregal noch Platz schaffen will, kann gerne die Fächer, in denen Screaming Trees, Flying Eyes, Black Crowes oder Woodcocks stehen, etwas dichter packen, damit GAVIAL darin Platz finden. Alphabetisch sortiert macht VOR aber auch zwischen Gaffa Ghandi, Geraldine Fibbers und Giant Sand eine gute Figur.

Lyrisch sind GAVIAL verhalten konkret und erforschen die ambivalenten Tiefen der Seele, in denen es mehr Fragen als Antworten gibt. Dabei intoniert Sänger Benjamin Butter an Charles Baudelaire erinnernde lyrische Skizzen von Gemütszuständen zwischen Melancholie, leiser Wut und Hoffnung schleierhaft und macht die Stimme zu einem weiteren Instrument. Im Zusammenspiel mit treibenden Basslinien und Americana-haften Gitarren ergibt sich Musik wie sie sein soll: melodiös aber nicht profan, zugänglich, aber mit fragilem Boden.

VOR wurde im Proberaum der Band aufgenommen. Der Mix entstand in Zusammenarbeit von Benjamin Butter und Bernard Camilleri, mit dem die Band seit 2016 aufnahmetechnisch eng zusammenarbeitet. Das Mastering entstand dann in Camilleris Xekillton Studio auf Malta. Das Artwork stammt aus der Serie “Flowers Of Terrible” des in Berlin lebenden Künstlers Hamid Yaraghchi.

Die Platte erscheint auf Exile On Mainstream als schwarzes Vinyl sowie digital. Eine limitierte CD-Version ist auf den Konzerten der Band erhältlich.

The story of GAVIAL began nearly 15 years ago as a project adapted from a Nirvana song and pun as “Two Red Boys”. Three albums as TOURETTE BOYS, two collaborations with UK-based blues musician Tim Holehouse and a split EP with label mates Gaffa Ghandi later, the band played countless gigs and tours with bands like Acid Mothers Temple, Dyse, Gaffa Ghandi, The Skull, True Widow and Sleepy Sun. This musical project is based on friendship despite the fact that the musicians live in different cities. The vast and untouched landscapes between Berlin and Dresden may have contributed to the inspiration for the sound of the band, which repeatedly tries to ground Psychedelic abstraction in modern blues. The result is more reminiscent of the desert rock that we know from the vastness of Arizona than the urban hustle and bustle in big cities. Shimmering soundscapes, partly dark and melancholic, then again full of hope and glaring light filled with the comforting, but nonetheless ominous heat of the desert – GAVIAL remain true masters of that.

Wait…GAVIAL? Tourette Boys? It’s 2023 and it’s time for a turning point. And that on three different levels. With VOR, the band’s fourth album is for the first time distributed on a label – Exile On Mainstream. For the recordings in 2022 the band grows from a trio to a quartet. And with that move comes a name change that was long overdue, which the band explains by stating:

However, in the last few years, we frequently discussed our music, videos, and name and tried to reflect on our decisions during that time. Concerning the name of the band, we have come to the decision that it is no longer appropriate to continue using it. Affected people deserve respect and we think that this band name shows a lack thereof. For that, we want to apologize.

VOR is once again characterized by the search for a contemporary expression of the Blues without questioning its authenticity. GAVIAL weaves musical inspiration from Ambient, Soul, Gospel and Country into different threads from a carpet of sound that simply ignores the sharp cliffs of redundant categories such as Retro or Stoner. The music doesn’t need name dropping, but if you still want to make room in your thematically sorted record shelf, you’re welcome to make some room in the compartments in which you put your Screaming Trees, Flying Eyes, Black Crowes or Woodcocks, so that GAVIAL can find space in them. Sorted alphabetically, VOR also cuts a fine figure between Gaffa Ghandi, Geraldine Fibbers and Giant Sand.

Lyrically, GAVIAL are cautiously concrete, exploring the ambivalent depths of the soul where there are more questions than answers. Singer Benjamin Butter intones lyrical sketches of emotional states between melancholy, quiet anger and hope, reminiscent of Charles Baudelaire, and turns the voice into another instrument. The interplay with driving bass lines and Americana-esque guitars results in music as it should be: melodic but not profane, accessible but with a fragile base.

VOR was recorded in the band’s rehearsal room and mixed by Benjamin Butter and Bernard Camilleri, who has become their go-to sound engineer. Bernard Camilleri did the mastering at his Xekillton Studio in Malta. The artwork is from the “Flowers Of Terrible” series by Berlin-based artist Hamid Yaraghchi.

The record will be released on Exile On Mainstream on black vinyl and digitally. A limited CD version is available at the band’s concerts.
